Developing an entrepreneurial mindset through WIL

This webinar will explore the role work integrated learning can play in developing and evidencing an entrepreneurial mindset in students. An entrepreneurial mindset is increasingly a requirement of contemporary workplaces. How can WIL help students develop, articulate and evidence these capabilities?

Join speakers, who have experience or have undertaken research in this area, who will share their insights in this important topic. This will be followed by discussion with colleagues from across the globe to explore and share ideas around enhancing students’ innovation and entrepreneurial skills.

Dr Karsten Zegwaard

Director of Work-Integrated Learning Research, University of Waikato, New Zealand.

Karsten is the Editor-in-Chief for the International Journal of Work-Integrated Learning (www.ijwil.org), co-editor of the International Handbook on Cooperative and Work-Integrated Education, Vice-President of New Zealand Association for Cooperative Education (NZACE).

He is the recipient of several awards, including the CEIA Ralph W. Tyler Award for Outstanding and Distinguished Research (2013), WACE Donald McLaren Academic Award for Professional Achievement in Cooperative and Work-Integrated Education (2015), the CEIA James W. Wilson Award for Outstanding Contribution to Research in the Field of Cooperative Education and Internships (2019), and the Fellow of Work-Integrated Learning New Zealand (WILNZ) award (2020).

Prof. Alon Eisenstein

Ph.D. M.Ed.Assistant Professor of Teaching, Technology Entrepreneurship and Professional Development, Faculty of Applied Science, School of Engineering, The University of British Columbia - Okanagan Campus, Syilx Okanagan Nation Territory, Canada .

Since joining the UBC School of Engineering earlier this year, Dr. Eisenstein has introduced and taught several courses on the topics of entrepreneurship, innovation and leadership, applying experiential learning pedagogy throughout. Building on his previous experience teaching at the University of Toronto’s Impact Centre, Dr. Eisenstein has been developing and studying the use of Entrepreneurial Work-Integrated Learning (EWIL) pedagogy.

As part of a school-wide curricular Indiginization effort, Dr. Eisenstein is currently leading a SoTL project to study the impact a course intervention has on students’ awareness and understanding of their professional obligations for respectful engagement with Indigenous communities in Canada.

Associate Professor Judith Smith

Director, Next Gen Learning, Learning and Teaching Unit, Queensland University of Technology, Brisbane, Australia.

In her role as Director – Next Gen Learning, Judith provides strategic leadership to QUT’s learning and teaching innovation strategy in emerging pedagogies and technologies that align to the university’s real world learning vision.

She has also provided institutional leadership to Work Integrated Learning (WIL) strategy, policy, curriculum design and practice. Judith has contributed to numerous national WIL research grants including leading The Edge Project, a multi-institutional research project focused on the development of enterprise and entrepreneurial capabilities through emerging models of WIL.

Judith is a Principal Fellow of the UK Higher Education Academy (PFHEA).

Dr Trevor Gerhardt (SFHEA)

Academic Lead for Work Integrated Learning at Pearson Business School, Pearson College, London, UK and a Senior Freelance lecturer.

Trevor teaches in disciplines such as theological reflection, education, and business. He is a convenor for the Working Life and Learning Network for the European Society for Research on the Education of Adults (ESREA).

He has published in journals and various book titles as well as courses on Udemy. He is an active member of ASET, ACEN, WACE and Advance HE.

Associate Professor Sonia Ferns

Managing Partner of LearnWork Consulting, Adjunct Associate Professor at Curtin University, Australia.

Sonia was previously Science Academic Lead at Curtin University. She has led institutional strategic projects on curriculum renewal focusing on quality enhancement and establishing an institutional quality framework for WIL. In 2020 she led renewal of the Mining Engineering degree in partnership with industry and the Minerals Council of Australia. Designing and delivering interdisciplinary WIL subjects to Science Technology Engineering and Maths (STEM) students has been a key part of Sonia’s role in recent years.

She is Immediate Past President of the Australian Collaborative Education Network. Sonia has led or been a member of the lead team for 11 national projects on WIL. She has published extensively on industry engagement and WIL and is an Associate Editor for the International Journal of WIL. She works collaboratively with an international consortium of WIL researchers.

Chris Jones

Technology and Entrepreneurship tutor, Pearson Business School, Pearson College, London, UK.

Chris Jones has been programming computers since he was 10 years old, and after years in industry started his own software company that developed solutions in fields as varied as event photography, aviation, hydroponics and logistics. In 2017 he moved into teaching at Pearson College London, where he heads up modules on entrepreneurship, strategic management and technology. As entrepreneurship tutor he sees students perform work integrated learning as both the learner and the founder of the business.

Chris has been experimenting with different ways to integrate real world business experience into his teaching. He has been shortlisted in THE awards as “Innovative Teacher of the Year”. He is also working on new technology solutions to promote better integration between businesses and students, especially in the remote working world that seems to be immerging post covid-19.

Professor Per Assmo

Professor in Human & Economic Geography, University West, Sweden.

Per Assmo is Professor in Human & Economic geography at University West, Sweden where he is the Programme Director for the master’s programme in work integrated political studies. He also holds a position as Extraordinary Professor at University of Western Cape, connected to the department for political studies. He has since the 1990’s conducted various R&D projects in Eastern and South Africa.

Per’s current research work primarily includes WIL oriented cooperative projects with municipalities in Sweden focusing on various aspects local societal development. He is also participating in the development of WIL as an academic research and education field at University West, and with international partners.
